MARINE CHARTS
The oldest known nautical chart dates from the end of the 13th century, but nautical charts began to appear in earnest in the 15th century. For this series, sea charts inspire freedom and escape for the artist, leading her to imagine marine animals in an artistically reinvented habitat.
Françoise Dagorn tears up the maps and rearranges them to her inspiration in order to escape into an imaginary world. She then paints the marine animal which takes a disproportionately majestic place to remind us that the ocean is its habitat and that it is the major actor of this space. The land is always present in her works but has a secondary role to remind us that the oceans cover more than 70% of the planet's surface and that they must be protected.
